REPORTING BACK -- Europe's political cast of characters
To acquaint listeners with that continent's new set of leaders, IAN PHILLIPS, a deputy editor at the AP's Europe and Africa Desk, gives a who's who rundown in an asap podcast.

October 16, 2007
From asap, The Associated Press

Some new faces have recently taken the helm in European nations -- Angela Merkel, Nicolas Sarkozy, Gordon Brown and others who aren't yet household names.

Is Brown a bore compared to his predecessor? Are Sarkozy and his wife priming for divorce? Do you even care about that sort of gossip, when you don't even recognize these names yet as politically significant?

To catch you up on the leaders taking over Jacques Chirac, Tony Blair, Gerhard Schroeder and other old powerhouses, AP Deputy International Editor NICOLAS B. TATRO sat down for a conversation with IAN PHILLIPS, a deputy editor at the AP's Europe and Africa Desk who popped into AP headquarters during a visit to New York.

Phillips says the new cast list reflects "not necessarily a change of policy, as such, but a change of style."

Listen to this asap podcast to learn about a continent's dawning leadership -- and some of its squabbles so far.
