Tossed offers bowl lot of variety

March 30, 2007

Tossed co-owner Alanna Jones says the restaurant recently added recommendations to help customers choose combinations from 47 ingredients. (STEVEN LANE/The Columbian)
Tossed co-owner Alanna Jones says the restaurant recently added recommendations to help customers choose combinations from 47 ingredients. (STEVEN LANE/The Columbian)

Why: Tossed, a few doors down from the Vancouver Farmers Market, gives diners the chance to build their version of a perfect salad or wrap by choosing from a list of 47 ingredients. The restaurant sets the tone for an informal atmosphere at the door. Diners design their salad by making selections at the counter. You can get the salad to go or take a seat at one of the restaurant's tables.

You'll love it if ... You subscribe to the belief that a salad can act as a whole meal.

Don't go if ... You're indecisive. A customer told his companion "it's too complicated" and left the line before ordering during our visit.

Complicated? No. Overwhelming? It can be.

Start by selecting a wrap, which comes inside of a garlic herb tortilla; a salad; or a pasta bowl. Choose from four types of greens -- iceberg or romaine lettuce, spinach, or spring mix.

Then, choose your ingredients. The list of 47 tossings ranges from anchovies and artichoke hearts to mandarin oranges and tortilla strips. Diners also have a selection of six types of cheeses and six types of nuts.

For a little extra cash, choose from 10 proteins, including turkey, ham, tofu and albacore tuna salad.

Finish it off with one of 20 dressings. The meal includes thin breadsticks.

The hardest part of ordering a salad following the restaurant's five-step process is stopping at five tossings, which are included in the base price of a salad. Additional ingredients cost 50 cents apiece.

You should know: Tossed offers a low-fat cilantro lime vinaigrette and three varieties of fat-free dressings, just in case you're counting calories.

Cost: A salad, wrap or pasta bowl starts at $6.99. Each includes up to five ingredients and dressing. Additional tossings cost 50 cents. Proteins cost $1.50 to $2.

Children can order macaroni and cheese, pasta or a small salad with three toppings for $3.99.

Where: 585 W. Eighth St., Vancouver; 360-693-1444.

Hours: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday through Thursday; 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.
